Clothing Semester
9-12

The art of designing, creating, or constructing your own garments is the main focus of this second semester only course. While earning a half a credit, students learn to evaluate their own wardrobes and begin long-range planning of their wardrobes. The use and care of sewing machines will be taught. Students will learn spot removal and garment mending. Each student will complete at least five sewing projects which range from something for their room to a garment for themselves. Students with advanced sewing knowledge will be taught to design patterns, instructions, and styles of garments. This class has a tradition of making quilts for those in the community who are ill. This class is good for students needing a job skill and students wanting to go into the Clothing and Textiles area.
Interior DesignSemester

Interior Design Semester
9-12

Interior Design is the study of how to plan and furnish interiors. This class is only offered second-semester, every-other year. The next opportunity to take this class is January '09. During this one semester course, basic skills are studied in drawing interior and architectural floor plans, space planning, elements and principles of design, electrical plans and working with interior coverings. The student will give a visual presentation after building a miniature room that includes interior coverings and furniture. After the study of architectural style of homes and furniture, field trips are taken to area houses. Housing cost, both renting and buying, as well as technology and energy usage are studied. The end project is the student's drawing their dream house complete with furniture and the cost of the interior items. This class is good for students needing a job skill for future home ownership skills, and students wanting to go to college in the interior architect field.
Independent Living

Independent Living Semester
9-12

Independent Living is a semester class, offered only second-semester. The class teaches students that to be successful on your own is key to being a successful person in life. Independent Living covers skills needed to be on your own. Making a budget, borrowing money, credit cards, consumer rights, insurance and investing money are a few of the topics covered in the Consumer Unit. In the Housing Unit the student will make decisions about housing and the laws involved in renting and owning. Students will also study about setting up an apartment, mending, spot removal and wardrobe planning will be topics we will cover in the Clothing Unit. Providing safe and nutritious foods will be covered in the Foods Unit. Completing job applications, making resumes, cover letters, follow-up letters, and interviewing are all parts of the Careers unit. Moving from Independent Living to developing your own Family Unit will end our Class.

Marriage & Family

Marriage & Family Semester
9-12

Marriage and Family is a semester course offered first semester and is worth a half credit. It covers how to start and keep a good marriage. The students study the function of a dating and the process of solving dating conflicts. Students also study how to plan for life after the wedding. Each class member will compile a folder including information helping them plan their life after they get married. This will include learning how to deal with in-laws, solving problems, career decisions, teamwork skills, roles, financial planning, balancing work and family, family planning, housing, and free time. Planning and preparing for a family leads to many interesting projects. Divorce and single parenting are also discussed. Aging and death is the final topic dealt with.
Parenting

Clothing Semester
9-12

Parenting is a semester course offered both semesters, understanding the job of parenting and careers working with children. As students study roles and responsibilities of parenting they see the importance of planning parenthood. Students will analyze factors that impact human growth and development as they study pregnancy. They will look at social, emotional, physical and intellectual development of an infant, toddler, and preschoolers. Communication, leadership skills will improve during the class preschool, increasing ones employability skills as well as life skills are part of this class.
Fashion Marketing

Clothing Semester
9-12

The world of fashion is glamorous, but it is also a very challenging world. The Fashion Class looks at the careers of Fashion, from Fashion Marketing to Fashion Design, and from textiles to fabric construction. Looking at customer service and marketing of textiles and garments starts the class off. We also study the effects technology and the economy has on the textile and fashion industry. Seeing how design principles affects designing garments and textiles is studied. The class will work together to host a fashion show by working with local retail businesses showing the latest fashion trends. We end the class with students getting experience in fashion design, fashion drawing, textiles, fashion writing, or retail sales. Fashion Marketing is a one-semester class, offered second-semester, every even year. (2008,2010, exc.)

Adv. FACS

Adv. FACS Semester
9-12

This course lasts one semester and students interested in enrolling must have taken some other Family and Consumer Science class. Preparing for your future in a Family and Consumer career area is the main focus. The area of study can be any of the following: childcare, fashion, nutrition, foods, clothing, interior design, entrepreneurship, family management, and independent management. The student has a choice of going to a work experience set up by the instructor or doing advanced study on the topic in the classroom. Research on the job they are interested in and post-high school education for that area will also be discussed.
Work Study FACS

Work Study FACS Semester
9-12

Students who have completed Advanced FACS, can ask to do on the job training in FACS. The student would work alongside an experienced employee to gain more hands on experience in their FACS area. The student will complete a portfolio to prepare for college or post-high school training.

Preparing for your future in a Family and Consumer career area is the main focus. Students will get job experience in the Parenting field or related fields. The students will learn the technology that business had, customer relations, and Parenting skills. Two reports will be completed on the parenting career they are interested in and the other on where they could go for Post-High School education in that field.
Work Study Parenting

Students will locate and get a paid position in a child development or child development related field. They will be at this position 5, 6, and 7th hour. Students are required to complete a time sheet and add to their portfolio.
